Welcome to another ETalk, where we introduce an amazing person at Elevate K-12 involved in revolutionizing education through high-quality live online instruction inside schools!
Name: Joan M.
Location: Centereach, NY
Experience With Elevate K-12: 1 year
Expert/Superstar In: Life Science and Biology
What excites you most about teaching your particular subject?
It is wonderful to help students appreciate the biodiversity in their own neighborhoods and the complexity of their own bodies.
How do you make live, online instruction engaging?
Allowing students to have options in what they are working on and in how they are responding during class can make the students feel empowered and encourage them to participate more.
What strategies do you use to effectively reach your students who are working below grade-level expectations?
It is helpful to design activities that incorporate different "levels" of learning and to provide examples by answering questions together. Students working below grade level have extended periods of time to complete assignments. I also use the chat tool to discuss any concepts that students are struggling with.
What do you like about working from home/remotely?
Working from home allows me to be more focused on teaching. The fewer distractions I have, the better I can teach! Because I don't have to commute to work, I have more time to prepare for classes.
How do you ensure your students have been successful whether they're learning at home, school, or both?
Students can demonstrate their understanding of science concepts by the successful completion of QZs, assignments, presentations, and assessments. Students may be permitted to retake assessments to improve their scores.
Describe your best moment teaching live and online. Be specific!
The best moments occur when a student who rarely participates seems to come alive by answering questions during class, reading the slides, or completing activities in OTUS. I am never quite sure what triggers the change, but it is always cause for celebration!
Tell us a little more about who you are--what do you like to do?
Some favorite pastimes are reading, playing violin, and biking. I enjoy planting native plants and then watching different birds and butterflies visit. Years ago I led kayaking trips and biking tours which were great fun.
Thanks, Joan M.!
