Experience With Elevate K-12: 1 year

What excites you most about teaching your particular subject?
What excites me the most about teaching Mathematics is the big Aha! moments that students have when the material starts to click for them and the previous lessons all of a sudden make sense.
How do you make live, online instruction engaging?
I make live, online instruction engaging by trying to treat it the same as an in-person classroom. I cold call often and I am patient with the students when they are trying to answer a question.
What strategies do you use to effectively reach your students who are working below grade-level expectations?
I will usually give a more guided help and scaffold the questions when working with new students and as we go through more examples I remove the supports. If I remove too much support and they get lost again, I try to add in a clarifying question that I know they can answer and that helps them visualize the question and answer.
What do you like about working from home/remotely?
What I enjoy about working from home/remotely is the ability to do things on my own time, having a space I am comfortable with, which makes it easier for my students to feel comfortable, and most importantly the commute.
How do you ensure your students have been successful whether they're learning at home, school, or both?
I have always thought that formative assessments are the most important factor to gauge learning because they are direct, short, and low stakes. Through constant and timely assessments throughout a course, I am able to guide my students' learning at each step of their semester.
Describe your best moment teaching live and online. Be specific!
Not really a specific moment, but a feeling that always stands out for me is that no matter the circumstances at school or at home, my students are always online and ready to learn. The extent that my students will go to come to class and their willingness to show up and engage every day is inspiring.
Tell us a little more about who you are--what do you like to do?
I really enjoy the outside world! I enjoy running, swimming, biking, and hiking. I don't know if I have a favorite hobby, it honestly depends on the time of year and my mood. I grew up on the beaches of New York so I enjoy all beach activities, but in the summer I really enjoy snowboarding. I am also a coach for Track and Field and Cross Country at my local high school in Portland.
Thanks, Kasey G!
